Reflecting on the Gift of Life – Merry Christmas!

On 27th March 2020, South Africa entered one of the darkest chapters in our recent history as we entered national lockdown. It was a time marked by fear, confusion, and uncertainty. Common sense seemed to vanish, mainstream media propagated a single narrative, and we were forcibly shut out of the life we once knew. It was a time of distress.
Today, on Christmas Eve, 24th December 2024, it’s been 1,733 days since that fateful moment. Though the memories of that challenging period still haunt many of us, the world is moving forward. Our town is thriving, our beaches are alive with people, local businesses are bustling, and hope seems to be returning.

Christmas, whether you embrace its religious meaning or not, has the power to stop the world in its tracks. It’s a time of reflection, gratitude, and giving. A heartfelt thanks to all the businesses who choose to close on Christmas Day, honouring the spirit of the season.
Children’s Christmas lists are scribbled in tiny handwriting, gifts are being sought with excitement, and yet, so many miss the deeper meaning – the birth of Jesus Christ.
How many of us truly pause to think about the greatest gift of all? The birth of our Saviour?
As I reflect on these 1,733 days, I’m reminded that each one of them was a gift – a chance to make choices, to learn, to love, to grow. What did we do with those days?
The very fact that you’re reading this post, or simply scrolling through, means today is a gift. What did you do with it? What will you do with tomorrow?
I believe that when our time comes, the Lord will ask us this very question: “What did you do with the life I gave you?”
Tomorrow is not promised. We set our alarms with hope – perhaps in faith, or sometimes out of arrogance or ignorance – but only God holds the final say.
Christmas is about the birth of Jesus, a free gift given at a tremendous cost to our Saviour. Whatever your path, remember that each day is a gift. Whether you're spending time with family, going to work, or blessing others, every moment is a precious opportunity.
May we all remember to cherish each day.
Merry Christmas to you all, and may the true meaning of this season fill your hearts.
